3 Awesome Team Building Activities Your Employees Will Love

Think back to when you were in grade school, and on the first day of class your teachers always started with an “ice breaker” exercise. You had to stand up, introduce yourself, and say “one cool fact” about you. Sure this entertained the teacher, but it caused you and the rest of the class to break out in a cold sweat and have moderate to severe heart palpitations.

As a manager, I’m certain you want to build camaraderie within your team with team building activities… but how can you achieve this without making everyone want to bury their heads in the ground? I’m going to share a few of my favorite ways to lead productive team building activities that are a lot more enjoyable and a lot less miserable:

1. Collaborative Professional Development

Learning and growth is fundamental in your employees’ success… and it can also be an opportunity to build relationships and bonds within the team. Activities like this can include: workshops, guest speakers, attending seminars, webinars… just to name a few. Building relationships at work isn’t always easy, but learning collaboratively can kick-start the process.

2. Form A Service Squad

Working towards giving back for a cause your team cares about is a great way to connect. Whether it’s participating in a school supplies drive for kids in need, visiting an animal shelter, volunteering in a soup kitchen to feed the hungry… these forms of activities provides an opportunity for the team to do something meaningful for others, give back, and learn more about each other. If you don’t have the ability to take a full/half day out of the office, dedicate an hour to write Christmas cards to kids in hospitals or letters to military service members.

3. Field Trip It Up

This is a sure-fire way to get the friendship juices flowing on your team! Sometimes it’s best to let people interact freely—no formal plan required. Take a trip to a local park and have a field day—complete with food, fun games, and prizes. Have a group dinner and see a movie once a quarter. Or, depending on how risky you’re feeling, try a team-building obstacle course. These are all great ways to break out of the cubicle confines and have fun and build memories with coworkers!

Not only will these activities create a sense of unity and a bond within your team, but also your employees will respect you more as a manager. A great leader encourages the better development of, engagement, and inspiration of his or her team.
